June 13-19 is Men’s Health Week

Senior Care in East Windsor NJ

Each year, the week leading up to Father’s Day is observed as Men’s Health Week.  On Father’s Day, you take the time to show your dad how much you care, but there’s no better way to do this Senior-Care-in-East-Windsor-NJthan to show them that you care about their health and encourage them to take great care of their health.  During Men’s Health Week, it is a great idea to talk to your aging father about their health and health concerns.  In addition, it is a great time to ask them if there are ways that you can help such as by accompanying them to the fitness center once a week, helping them grocery shop, or driving them to a doctor’s appointment.  There are many ways that you can support and encourage your aging father during Men’s Health Week and all year long, here are just a few ideas to try:

Do Something Active

We all know that exercise has many health benefits and regular exercise can help to prevent many serious medical conditions.  However, many people find exercise to be a chore.  The truth is that it doesn’t have to be!  Encourage your dad to do a physical activity by suggesting that you do something together that is fun, entertaining and enjoyable.  Some ideas include going for a hike, playing golf, going for a swim, or playing racquetball.

Ask About (And Schedule) Check-Ups, Vaccines, and Screenings

Does your aging father remember when they last went to the dentist? Or, the eye doctor?  Are they up to date on their vaccines and are they on schedule with screenings that are appropriate for their age?  If not, now is a great time to make some appointments.  Encourage your dad to make all of the necessary appointments and offer to help, if needed, by driving him, cooking a meal while he is out, or taking care of some household chores.

Make a Healthy Meal

If your father is reluctant to try new healthy foods, offer to come over and prepare a meal for him.  Use unique and healthy fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins and see if there are any he enjoys.  He just may discover a new nutritious food to include in his healthy eating routine.

Start a New Tradition

Healthy habits can be hard to start and your aging father may need your help.  Offer to start a new healthy “tradition” with him such as walking the dog with him every Tuesday morning, helping him to prepare healthy snacks for the week on Sunday nights, or joining him at the fitness center every Monday.
